ADAM PENDLETON: BAM SPLIT LAB AND THE AFRO FUTURISTIC UNDERGROUND
The exhibition consisted of approximately fifteen paintings that wrapped around the interior of the gallery, and five large-scale works. The paintings functioned as conceptual manifestations connecting design, architecture and experimental writing. Adam Pendleton has been noted for his ‘complicating’ use of text and imagery, both appropriated and self-generated. Through extreme freedom of reference and quotation and a dismissal of conventional hierarchies between sources, Pendleton aims to create a perpetual de-historicized present tense; one that upsets and imbalances comfortably subjective interpretations of history and culture.
