ZOE CROSHER: FIGURE AND FORM IN CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY – LACMA, LOS ANGELES, CA
Capturing the human form continues to have relevancy to contemporary photographers as realized in this exhibition of recent acquisitions from artists such as Zoe Crosher, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman and Baldessari.
The focus of the exhibition comes in many modes – from the abstracted, to the gestural or performative; inclusive of the figure as conceptual, as sculptural, and as the object of observation, both straightforward and sublime, among other treatments. From Viviane Sassen’s evocative work that seems to defy the limits of the posed body (2010), to Bruce Conner’s graphically pure life-size photogram (1974), to Paul Graham’s narrative, yet unscripted, six-part piece (2005), to Ken Gonzales-Day’s photo mural, whose composition is a confrontation both internal and external (2011).
