Perry Rubenstein Gallery 24th Street is pleased to present a new installation by Berlin-based artist Gitte Schäfer. History and memory weave a tremulous path through the varied artistic practices of Schäfer, including sculpture, painting, drawing, and design. Working skillfully in these mediums, Schäfer reinterprets several historical sources as far-reaching as German Romanticism, mid-century European industrial design and the Japanese tradition of Ichiban sculpture. A series of individual works constitute one complete installation, an environment that melds isolated elements of design, architecture and art into peculiar yet familiar universal forms. For her exhibition with Perry Rubenstein Gallery, Schäfer will work with the intimate cube-like setting of the gallery to aid in her creation of a signature installation, one that is activated by exploiting the tension between a utopian view of the future and the limitations of the experience of art.
