(February 6, 2006- New York) Perry Rubenstein Gallery is pleased to present The Trace of a Trace of a Trace, an exploration of painting. The exhibition takes as its starting point the mediated history of painting; its sublime effects on art today; and how these artists, for the most part, remove the authorial signifier so not to interfere with the autonomy of the painting as object. In case of Daan van Golden, Vija Celmins and Gerhard Richter, the source material used include both cultural icons or signifiers as well as the vernacular in order to blur the aesthetic boundaries that are prevalent in the hierarchy of iconography. Many of the works in the show are so evidently slow in their representation to the image that they purposely call upon the viewer to make a patient perceptual movement back and forth within the represented space. The exhibition also aims to continue to go through the revolving door of the history of painting and representation, and more importantly probe recent discussion surrounding the image of representation rather than the exhaustive approach of the representation of image.
