Perry Rubenstein Gallery is pleased to present On Second Thought, an exhibition of multimedia works by John Baldessari, Mike Kelley & Paul McCarthy, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Adam Pendleton, Sturtevant, and Meyer Vaisman. By exploring the complexities memory - universal and personal, collective and individual, and objective and subjective - On Second Thought uncovers how artists can manipulate memory in order to alter the perception of their own work.

The artists featured in On Second Thought have worked to minimize the separation that exists between creator and creation while producing work that challenges the role of artists and identity in art. For example, John Baldessari used photography, text and humor to create a peculiarly potent strain of California conceptual art. First created in the late 1960s and again revisited in the mid 1990's. Baldessari's National City series interchanged memory and process to expose memory as a non-hierarchical experience. Similarly, Adam Pendleton reconfigures social, political and cultural contexts through combinations of text, research and documentation. Jeff Koons relates the transference of context to a collective consciousness heavily influenced by the imagery of mass media. Koons taps into communal memories associated with childhood and adolescence to articulate questions of sex, class, power and materialism that have resulted from contemporary consumer culture. Sturtevant's films challenge the traditional roles of ownership and identity in art in order to reveal memory as objective. Fresh Acconci, Mike Kelly and Paul McCarthy's collaborative video restaging of Vito Acconci's performances in the 1970's, purposely misrepresents Acconci's original pieces. Kelly and McCarthy create an altered context for Acconci by shooting the repeat performances with the stylized film genres of the 1990's.
